Research interests

  • The emergence of Arab-Islamic culture in late antiquity
  • History and literature of al-Andalus
  • Adab, encyclopaedias and anthologies in Arabic literature
  • Forms of fictional and factual narration
  • Pharaonic Egypt in the mirror of Arabic texts

Isabel Toral's research focuses on Arabic cultural history, with a special focus on the pre-Islamic period and the period to the 11th century AD. Her regional priorities include al-Andalus, Syria and Iraq. She is particularly interested in forms of cultural contact and transfer. 

She is currently working on a monograph on al-ˁIqd al-Farīd, an Adab collection by Ibn ˁAbd-Rabbih (died 328/940). Here she is interested in both the encyclopaedic dimension and the reception history of this classic. In this context, she regularly collaborates with colleagues from the CSIC (Consejo Superior of Investigaciones Científicas, Madrid).

Since October 2018, she has led the ERC project AnonymClassic as Deputy PI. Her focus is on aspects of fictional storytelling and cultural translation.
