Vortrag: Does feminism exist in China?

19.04.2018 | 18:00

Li Maizi (La Verne)

Does feminism exist in China? This talk will give you the answer. Li Maizi is one of China’s feminist activists. Since 2012, the young woman uses a creative unique way of activism to address the reality of various gender inequality issues in China. A criminal detention in 2015 shut all her campaigns down. Is there still a political space for a Chinese feminism movement?

Li Tingting (李婷婷), aka Li Maizi (李麦子) is a Chinese campaigner and activist for gender equality and sexuality. She was detained by police on the eve of International Women's Day 2015 while protesting against sexual harassment on public transport. She was released from custody a month later. Li has reportedly been put on the Chinese media blacklist: national media will not report on or talk with her. Li is currently living in the USA and has written opinion pieces for international media, including The Guardian. She has also participated in discussion panels and given talks on feminism in China in the United States and UK.
