full-time job
limited to 3 years
Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L FU
Reference code: Kostka/DFG Postdoc

Job description:

The postdoctoral fellow will join a new DFG-funded project on “Interjurisdictional Competition and Cooperation in China: An Analysis of Sources and Policy Interventions at the County Level”, co-led by Sarah Eaton (Göttingen University) and Genia Kostka (Freie Universität Berlin). The position provides a great opportunity for both independent and collaborative research while working in a small research team based in Berlin. The research project will develop and apply an analytical framework to explain variation in local interjurisdictional relations in contemporary China ranging from competitive to cooperative behaviour in two selected policy fields of economics and environment. Relevant research questions are: 1) What is the nature of relations between localities on economic and environmental matters? How prevalent is competition compared to cooperation? 2) What are the sources of economic and environmental cooperation/conflict between localities? 3) How effective are current policy interventions aimed at eliminating undesirable forms of competition/enhancing cooperation? The project will employ mixed methods – both quantitative analysis and in-depth fieldwork. Responsibilities for the position include conducting empirical research for the DFG research project, working on joint research publications, organizing activities at the Freie Universität China Studies Institute such as workshops or events and taking a leading role in DFG grant administration. The salary will be paid at a E 13 TV-L level as defined by German public sector regulations.

Requirements:

  1. Completed doctorate by the time of appointment.
  2. Field open to any social-science or area studies (China-focused) discipline, e.g. economics, political science, Chinese studies or sociology.
  3. Empirical research focus on China;
  4. Fluency in Chinese and English.

Desirable:

  • Experience in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods
  • Research focus on environmental and economic issues in China is a plus.
