GEAS Graduate Conference:

Transnationalism and Institutions in East Asia

   Transnationalism – understood as the exchanges, connections, and practices across borders – has transgressed national boundaries and challenged nation states. In an interconnected world, the meaning and sovereignty of nation states has been increasingly blurred and bounded institutions have been questioned. Institutions are an essential element of society, as they organize social, political, economic, cultural, religious, and normative activities. Our conference seeks to explore the relationship between transnationalism and institutions in East Asia. Does transnationalism create a space for actors to negotiate existing structures? Does it provoke, on the contrary, a mobilization around local/national institutions to protect themselves from an openness experienced as a threat? More generally, how do institutions emerge, transform, resist, or disappear within the dynamics of transnationalism?

   We, the PhD candidates of the Graduate School of East Asian Studies (GEAS) at the Freie UniversitätBerlin, are pleased to organize the second GEAS Graduate Conference in October 2017 on institutions and transnationalism in East Asia. We invite young scholars to present their research on how individuals, groups, institutions and states interact with each other in a new global space where cultural, social and political characteristics of national societies are combined with emerging multilevel and multinational activities in China, Japan, and South Korea.

 

Application requirements:

   The conference is open to doctoral candidates and recent PhDs in area studies or social science disciplines related to East Asia. We welcome all disciplines, including but not limited to social and cultural anthropology, political science, economics, law, history, and sociology. Each participant is asked to hand in a paper in English and prepare a presentation, which will be followed by a discussion with invited scholars and specialists.

 

Application process and schedule:

1)      Applicants are to submit the paper title and abstract (no more than 300 words) by the 31st of July 2017 at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=geas2017.

2)      The selected participants will be notified by the end of August 2017.

3)    The final paper (5000-8000 words) should be sent to the organizers by 15th September 2017.
