the Rover and the transformation of Qing Taiwan

In March 1867 an American commercial barque, the Rover, wrecked off the southern cape of Taiwan.  The survivors landed in the tribal territory of the aborigines.  All were killed except one, who sped across a long distance to report the incident.  Multiple voices contributed to the subsequent telling of the Rover story.  This talk examines the shifting dynamics of the telling and the transformation of Qing Taiwan.
