10 Years of the EU-Korea Strategic Partnership: What to expect from the Relationship in the next Decade?
Event Description In October 2020, the EU-Korea Strategic Partnership celebrated its tenth anniversary. The relationship has flourished over the last decade, with South Korea becoming the first country to have signed with the EU three bilateral agreements in areas such as free trade, security and crisis management. Yet there are new challenges ahead for both sides – from dealing with Covid19 through climate change up to the global competition between the US and China. How will the EU-ROK Strategic Partnership develop over the next ten years? Can the EU and South Korea strengthen their relationship to become even closer like-minded partners supporting multilateral and free trade institutions across the globe? How does North Korea and relations with China fit within this equation? Two ambassadors, Ahn Chong Ghee, who served as ROK’s ambassador to the EU (2015-16) and Michael Reiterer, who was the head of EU Delegation to the ROK (2017-2020) will look at what we can expect from the EU-South Korea relationship in the next decade. The event will be chaired by Dr. Tereza Novotna, Korea-Europe Center Fellow.
