eating out on campus

Dining

There are a number of student restaurants on campus, known as “Mensa” – all run by the Studentenwerk. You can choose between the main Mensa, which offers the widest selection and is located near the Holzlaube, or smaller Mensas at other locations. These include a Mensa in the Koserstraße building and the Mensa Shokudō with its Japanese-inspired fusion concept. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are available everywhere.

First, you need a cafeteria card ("MensaCard"), which is very easy to obtain from vending machines. Cash payments are not accepted in the cafeterias. More information on the location of the canteens, the MensaCard system and the location of the vending mashines for Mensa cards an be found here

Cafés

There are several cafés on campus, some of which are run by students and are relatively inexpensive. The student café in the basement of the Holzlaube is called Café Holzkopf (wooden head). The Holzkopf café has limited opening hours (check here), but the room with its comfortable sofas and armchairs is always open for people to sit together and talk. Another popular café is Café Kauderwelsch in the Silberlaube (L-Straße, near the main entrance to the campus library). You can find many of these cafés on the campus map provided by Asta (the FU student union).

There are also some other, private run restaurants and cafés are located nearby in Dahlem.
