The Institute of Korean Studies (IKS) at Freie Universität Berlin invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship at the Korea-Europe Center. Applicants whose research focuses on (North and South) Korea-Europe relations and/or international relations are especially encouraged to apply.
About the Korea-Europe Center
The Korea-Europe Center, a joint project by the Institute of Korean Studies at Freie Universität Berlin and the KDI School of Public Policy and Management, is designed to provide educational opportunities for young scholars, acquiring in-depth knowledge and skills that cover a broad spectrum of Korean studies and enable a career in academia, business, media, international organizations, and interculturally oriented institutions. The project consists of diverse and innovative educational programs, such as a summer school in Korea, special lectures by renowned scholars, forums with experts of diverse fields and specific skills-based workshops.
Fellowship Grant
The fellowship covers a 12-month period with the possibility for an additional year extension. The fellowship provides a stipend of € 30,000 p.a. (health insurance not included).
The postdoctoral fellow will be provided a shared office space and access to the libraries and resources of Freie Universität Berlin.
Fellowship Requirements
Residence in the Berlin area during the fellowship period is required. The fellow is expected to take on an active role in the Korea-Europe Center’s programs and activities, e.g. presenting their own research through the special lecture program at IKS and by organizing events and workshops. The fellow may have the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses.
Eligibility and Application Submission
Applicants must hold a doctorate in Korean Studies/East Asian Studies or related discipline (e.g. Political Science or Social Sciences with a focus on Korea). Applicants must demonstrate how their projects will benefit from a fellowship at the Korea-Europe Center. A written and oral proficiency in English and Korean is expected. A basic command of German will be of benefit.

This four-month position is open to promising young scholars who have completed their PhD degree in the field of Korean Studies with a focus on social science.
Korea-Europe Programme is a new project starting in 2020 to train the next generation of experts in Europe on affairs related to Korea, led by FU Berlin-IKS and supported by KDI School.
The project is designed to offer educational opportunities to strengthen in-depth knowledge and skills that include a broad spectrum of all aspects of Korea and enable a career in academics, business, media, international organizations and interculturally-oriented institutions. The project is composed of diverse and innovative educational programmes such as a summer school in Korea, prestigious scholars' special lectures, well-experienced experts' forums, and specific skill-focused workshops.
Fellows are expected to conduct their own research related to the Korea-Europe programme and contribute to the project by doing an active role. Excellent proficient in spoken and written Korean and English are required. Highly skilled in spoken and written German is preferred.

CFA: Korea-Europe Programme Stipendien für BA- und MA-Abschlussarbeiten
Liebe Studierende der Koreastudien,
im Sommersemester 2020 bietet das Institut für Koreastudien im Rahmen des Korea-Europe Programme Stipendien für BA-und MA-Abschlussarbeiten an. Bewerben können sich Studierende im Kernfach Koreastudien, die in diesem Jahr ihr Studium abschließen werden und ihre BA/MA-Abschlussarbeiten bis spätestens Ende Juli 2020 offiziell angemeldet haben*. Aufgrund der aktuellen Situation sollen insbesondere soziale Aspekte bei der Vergabe berücksichtigt werden. Die Förderung beläuft sich auf 500 Euro pro Monat bei einer Laufzeit von vier Monaten (Mai - August 2020). Förderbeginn ist der 1. Mai 2020. Insgesamt stehen fünf Stipendien zur Verfügung.
Bewerber*innen reichen bitte folgende Unterlagen ein:

3. Kopie der Immatrikulationsbescheinigung (SoSe 2020)

CfA: Policy Paper Workshop

The Institute of Korean Studies (IKS) invites participants for the policy paper writing workshop. The workshop is for advanced doctoral candidates, postdocs, and junior scholars from the Korean Studies with a social science focus in Europe, who want to pursue the career at think tanks/public policy organization or develop their skill for writing a policy paper.
In this workshop, junior researchers have an opportunity to understand what the policy paper is and how to write a good policy paper. They learn how to approach to writing policy paper with their agenda and ideas.
The methods of the workshop consist of lecture, interactive presentation, group work, individual work on participants’ policy paper and discussions. The language is English.
We are delighted to announce that selected participants will be funded return airfare within Europe, accommodation (1 night) and meal during the workshop.

Instructor:
Dr Alexandra Sakaki
Alexandra Sakaki is a senior research associate in the Asia division at SWP (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik), an independent think tank that advises Germany’s parliament and federal government on foreign and security policy issues. Her research focuses on Japanese as well as Korean foreign and security policies. Having studied East Asian Studies and International Relations at Princeton University (USA) and at the University of Cambridge (UK), she received her doctorate in political science at the University of Trier (Germany). Before joining SWP in 2012, she was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Duisburg-Essen. She has authored numerous policy papers as well as articles in such journals as International Affairs, West European Politics, Pacific Affairs, East Asia and the Japanese Journal of Political Science. Her second, co-authored monograph Reluctant Warriors: Germany, Japan, and their U.S. Alliance Dilemma (Brookings Institution Press) was published in November 2019.
