Book Collections for East Asian Studies in Berlin
In the dynamic intellectual landscape of Berlin, a city celebrated for its scholarly vitality, a plethora of resources is dedicated to East Asian studies across a diverse array of libraries. Below, we present a selection of institutions both within the Freie Universität and beyond, each distinguished by noteworthy collections in the field of East Asian studies.
Campus Library at Freie Universität Berlin
The Campus Library houses the book collections for East Asian Studies at Freie Universität Berlin.
Chinese Studies
The Sinology collection comprises approximately 29,000 volumes and 29 current journal subscriptions. Literature with a strong connection to China (local identifier ‘CHINA’) is available in the basement of the Campus Library. Journals whose subscriptions have expired can be ordered from the stacks via Primo.
Japanese Studies
The collection of Japanese Studies comprises approximately 29,000 volumes and 68 current journal subscriptions. Literature with a special reference to Japan is located on the top floor of the Campus Library under the local identifier ‘JAPAN’.
A small part of the collection of the collection is located on the first floor of the Institute of Japanese Studies, Hittorfstr. 18, 14195 Berlin. You may find it while searching in Primo if the second label is "OAS, Referenzraum" and refers to a "Sonderstandort" (special location). In such cases, kindly contact the Secretary's office for Japanese Studies directly.
Korean Studies
The book collection of Korean Studies comprises about 20,000 volumes. Most of the books are shelved together under the local identifier 'Korea' on the top floor of the Campus Library.
This section receives generous donations from the Korea Foundation, the National Library of Korea, the National Assembly Library, the Korean Film Council, the Institute of Korean Classics, and the Literature Translation Institute.

Humboldt University Berlin: Departmental Library Asia / Africa
The Departmental Library Asia / Africa of the Humboldt University of Berlin comprises a collection of 150,000 volumes and 250 journal subscriptions. It collects literature on languages and literatures, history and regional studies of Asian and African countries. Special emphasis is placed on Africa, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, India and Tibet, as well as the entire Near and Central Asian region.

Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin: Special Collection East and Southeast Asia
The Staatsbibliothek emphasizes modern literature, but also features a vast collection of rare books from China and Japan, including manuscripts and block prints. The collection comprises about 650,000 volumes of literature in the original language (with an annual increase of about 20,000 volumes) and an extensive collection in Western languages, as well as about 4,000 current East Asian periodicals.
