Here you can find information regarding:

Prerequisites

To apply to the programme, you must fulfill two main criteria:

1. You must hold a first university degree (usually a Bachelor’s degree) comprising at least 180 credit points (ECTS). Programs relevant to an archaeological discipline comprise any degree in an archaeological discipline OR a degree in a related discipline like history, cultural anthropology, art history, historical geography or similar with a STRONG focus on archaeological topics. Wether such a relation is strong is evaluated by the MA-AAW selection commissiont. Please understand that such an evaluation is only possible within the application process, not ahead of it.

 2. You must provide proof of excellent English language skills (at least level C1 CEFR) if you have not obtained your first university degree in a program where English is the language of instruction.

Documenting your English language proficiency

The language of instruction in our program is English. We must stress that a high level of English proficiency is required in order to study our Master's program successfully. Even if you formally fulfill the language requirements, we recommend that you reflect on your language proficiency. Students are expected to read and understand academic texts, to discuss and present advanced scholarly questions when attending classes and to articulate their thoughts in an academic style when submitting assignments or writing research papers and their Master's thesis.

Language proficiency in German is not required for the program.

Applicants must submit proof of English language proficiency on a C1 (CEFRL) level together with their application. Do not send your certificates to our program's academic advisors, but upload them directly to the application portal.

The following certificates are accepted as proof of English language proficiency:

  • IELTS (Academic): overall score at least 7.0 (C1)
  • TOEFL Internet-based iB: overall score 100 or higher, at least 25 in writing
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): grades A-C
  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): grades A-C
  • Cambridge First Certificate of English (FCE): grades A-B
  • Cambridge English Scale CPE, CAE and FCE (from January 2015): overall score at least 180 and in writing at least 180
  • UNIcert® (level III or higher)

These certificates must not be older than three years at the time of application.

Applying with a degree from Germany

If you hold a first university degree from Germany, you must apply via the online form of Freie Universität Berlin.

Applying with a degree from a country other than Germany

If you hold a first university degree from a country other than Germany, you must apply via the portal uniassist (link)Freie Universität Berlin will accept applications by holders of non-German degrees only when submitted through this system. Within that system your application is evaluated – i.e. whether your degree and transcript meet the formal requirements (as outlined here on this page). The system does not check subject-specific entry requirements, which is done by the MA-AAW selection commission.

Please note that our program's advisors cannot answer inquiries concerning the formal aspects of the application process via the portal of Freie Universität, e.g. why necessary documents or certificates are (not) acknowledged. For these matters, please contact Freie Universität Berlin's admission office (info-service@fu-berlin.de).

And note for the application: the language requirements outlined here are relevant for your application.
