CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Workshop on Islamic Calligraphy

Applications open for Scriptorium 2025 workshop on Islamic manuscripts.

The Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, in collaboration with the Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation (London), is pleased to announce the opening of applications for the Scriptorium 2025 workshop series. The upcoming training course, titled "Paleographical Aspects of Islamic Manuscripts: Script and Calligraphy Styles and Usage" will take place from 22 to 26 September 2025 at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin.

This workshop will provide an in-depth exploration of the major scripts and calligraphy styles across the Islamicate world, covering periods and regions such as the Six Pens (naskh, thuluth, muhaqqaq, rayhani, tawqi', and riqa'), Islamic West scripts (Andalusian, Maghrebi), Eastern scripts (Ta'liq, Nasta'liq), Ottoman scripts, and more. Lectures will be paired with hands-on sessions, offering participants the chance to engage directly with manuscripts from the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin collection and refine their practical skills.
