09.09.2025 | 11:00

The Closing the Gap research team will present their in-depth analysis of the digital humanities data preservation crisis at the upcoming DOT 2025 – 35th Deutscher Orientalistentag conference.

The presentation “Closing the Gap: Addressing the Digital Humanities Data Preservation Crisis,” will highlight critical challenges in preserving digital resources generated by projects working with non-Latin scripts. Drawing on findings from the Closing the Gap project, which catalogs digital humanities initiatives involving ancient Greek, Coptic, Aramaic, and other non-Latin scripts.

The research identifies key contributing factors to this preservation crisis, including institutional barriers, inadequate technical infrastructure, and the prevailing academic metrics that undervalue digital preservation. Special attention will be given to the implications for equity and representation, particularly in projects that involve non-Latin script materials.
