Metal skins: The Materiality of Patina and Gilt in the Middle Ages

Ittai Weinryb

The project set to investigate the material and cultural reception of two forms of material applications, patina and gilt. Both present a very thin layer of material on top a surface and they are achieved through a chemical process in which materials are mixed and then applied onto the surface as to seem as a form of superficial oxidation.  The project focuses only on skins of the medieval metalwork and will also include writing on the topic of rust and natural oxidation. Both the material itself, but more so the technique in which one could reach the application is crucial for the understanding of the role of metal skins in medieval culture.
