Prof. Genia Kostka receives an ERC grant for the topic “Governing with Data: Local Experimentation in Authoritarian China”. The project will examine how digital technologies are integrated into local governing processes in Chinese cities and what the impact of big data is on social, political and economic life in China. Based on extensive field research and surveys, the findings will significantly add to the field of digital governance in authoritarian states and will contribute to debates reaching beyond the China context about societal change under advancing digitalization. The funding is 1.5 million Euros and the total project period is five years (starting October 2020).
