7th Annual Kim Dae Jung Lecture

In memory of the late South Korean president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Kim Dae Jung, the Institute of Korean Studies of the Freie Universität Berlin celebrates the 7th Annual Kim Dae Jung Lecture. This year, our speaker is Glyn Ford, who served as a Member of the European Parliament for 25 years, contributing significantly to international trade and foreign affairs, especially with Asia. Post his tenure, he continued his engagement with the DPRK through his NGO, Track2Asia, establishing a political dialogue with the Workers’ Party of Korea and visiting the DPRK nearly 50 times.

Summer School Special Lecture Series 2024 - Dr. Kwon Jinah

Beyond the Boundaries: Migration Choices of North Korean Women -Dr. Jinah Kwon (University of Sheffield) Abstract: TBA About the lecturer: Dr. Jinah Kwon is a political sociologist with an interdisciplinary background. Her Ph.D. dissertation dealt with the migration choices of women from North Korea and is planned to be published under Palgrave Macmillan Studies on Human Rights in Asia with a grant from the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS). She has worked on North Korean human rights with various institutions, including civil society organizations, government agencies, and international organizations for the last 15 years. Prior to joining SEAS, she served as a lecturer at the College of International Studies, Korea University, and as a senior research fellow at Soongsil Institute for Peace and Unification. She is also one of the recipients of the 2023 Award of Excellence presented by the Vice Prime Minister/ Minister of the Ministry of Education, Republic of Korea.

TBA -Prof. Dr. Seok-Kyeong Hong (Professor in the Department of Communication at Seoul National University and director of Center for Hallyu Studies, SNU Asia Center) Abstract: TBA About the lecturer: Seok-Kyeong Hong  is a Professor in the Department of Communication at Seoul National University and director of Center for Hallyu Studies, SNU Asia Center. Her research interest is the digital cultural forms and practices and transnational cultural flows in this era. She published  Hallyu in the Globalization and the Digital Era  (2013) and  BTS On the Road  (2020) as well as codirected  Transnational Convergence of Esat Asian Pop Culture  (2021). Her recent interest includes the intersectionality of gender and race in Hallyu Studies and the use of data analysis as an auxiliary method for studies on digital cultural practices.
