CfA: Korea Europe Center Workshop Series for Graduate Students and PhD Candidates

News vom 03.03.2021

Date and Time: summer term 2021/winter term 2021
Venue: Institute of Korean Studies, Freie Universität Berlin (online/offline/hybrid depending on the COVID19 development)

The Korea-Europe Center at the Institute of Korean Studies/Freie Universität Berlin invites applications for the 2021 Workshop Series for graduate students and PhD candidates.
The workshop series consists of four parts (please refer to the workshop you would like to attend, application for all sessions is possible and highly encouraged):

  • Publication Writing Workshop
    Instructor: tba
    Time: May 2021

This workshop focuses on the organization of an academic research paper. Participants will learn to write a rough draft of an academic paper and how to write a clear and concise abstract and cover letter for submission to a journal. Participants will learn about the publication process from a journal editor's perspective, along with how to choose the right journal for their paper as well as how to navigate peer review.

  •  Strategic Dialogue Workshop
Instructor: Dr. Tereza Novotná, Postdoctoral Fellow, Korea-Europe Center
    Time: June 2021

Strategic dialogue has been a term used increasingly more frequently, both in private and public sectors. Nevertheless, what does "strategic dialogue" exactly mean? How does it differ from a regular "bilateral" or "multilateral" meeting? Is it a formal or informal discussion? How does it compare and contrast to 1.5 and 2-track discussions? Can academics participate in strategic dialogues, or is it a format limited to practitioners, mostly from the field of politics? Who sets the agenda? How is a strategic dialogue organized in practice?

The one-day workshop will examine these and other questions covering the issue of strategic dialogue. The seminar will host speakers who have a rich experience from conducting such strategic dialogues with partners in Asia and, in particular, in both Koreas. The guest speakers will share their expertise and provide hands-on experiences. The seminar will be held under the Chatham House rule.

  • Methodology Workshop
Instructor: Dr. Seo-Young Cho, Postdoctoral Fellow, Korea-Europe Center
    Time: September 2021

This workshop focuses on methodologies that can be used for research on Korea in a systematic and integrative manner. Yet, the fields of Korean studies have not provided sufficient literature on methods for Korean studies. It is because scholars of area studies are often reluctant to adopt rigorous methods for evaluating country-specific questions and produce generalizable scientific knowledge. Conversely, social-science oriented scholars are often criticized for their lack of area-specific experience, far-reaching generalizations of concepts, and universalizing the application of research methods. Given the limitation in the present literature, the workshop will offer students opportunities to explore various research methods that integrate rigorous research design and context-sensitive in-depth research by interconnecting generalizable and local knowledge.

  • Policy Paper Writing Workshop
    Instructor: tba
    Time: October 2021

This workshop teaches basic techniques and strategies of writing policy papers. Participants have the opportunity to gain knowledge, skills and critical insight of people, who are engaged in policy paper writing. The workshop intends to illuminate the context in which policy papers are produced to influence decision making processes.

The workshop will consist of interactive training sessions and group discussions.
