Dr. Monique Felix Borin
Monique Borin joins the Friedrich-Meinecke Institute as a visiting postdoctoral fellow funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). I am currently a Post Doc Researcher at Museu Paulista (USP). PhD at UNICAMP. Visiting PhD researcher at the Escuela Tecnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM-UPM). Has a master's degree in Social History from the University of São Paulo (USP) (2014) and a Bachelor degree in History from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (2008). Areas of interest: urban history; neighborhood history; daily history; land market and real estate market in the 19th and 20th centuries; decolonial theory.
My current research proposes to examine the long-term impacts of colonization, conceptualized through the lens of coloniality, in the urbanization of São Paulo. To assert this phenomenon, the analyses will focus on the investments of European urban agents in the real estate and rental market for the working class in São Paulo as an expression of global capitalism reorganization in the nineteenth century. The historiographical review will begin by analyzing the trajectories of several European investors who frequently appear in the core research documentation, particularly the land transaction files from the Aguirra Archive. We will select key figures who appear frequently in our research for further investigation in European collections, aiming to trace the origins of their initial investments. By the end of this visiting research period, we aim to consolidate a historiographical overview grounded in internationally available literature, while also refining the documentation that supports the analysis of the European investors' trajectories studied in the main research.
