Marking the 40th anniversary of such events as the Iranian Revolution, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and the Siege of the Grand Mosque of Mecca, this international workshop at the Freie Universität Berlin on March 15-16, 2019 highlights recent research on the precedents, causes, and implications of the emergence of Islamist movements during the Cold War.
