Forum Transregionale Studien

04.04.2014 | 12:00 - 14:00

Dear fellows and colleagues,

We cordially invite you to the next Colloquium of the FORUM TRANSREGIONALE STUDIEN. The Colloquium is designed to open a discursive space for the ongoing scholarly exchange on questions of transregional research. It serves as an intellectual get-together for scholars who share the interest in bridging the gap between area studies and disciplines.

For our next session, we are glad to announce a talk by Matthias Middell, Professor of History at the Universität Leipzig, who will speak on the topic of “Global History and Transregional Studies”.

In his talk Matthias Middell will present some possible answers to the challenges of global and transregional studies based upon his experience made at Universität Leipzig and within a broader consortium of global studies programs (please scroll down for an abstract of his talk). The session will be introduced and moderated by Prof. Andreas Eckert (Forum Transregionale Studien/Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin).

The Colloquium will take place in the form of a brown bag seminar on 4 April 2014, 12-2 pm, at the Forum Transregionale Studien, Wallotstr. 14. 14193 Berlin. Drinks and snacks will be provided.

We would be delighted if you could attend Matthias Middell’s talk and enrich the discussion with your views on global and transregional studies.

Best wishes,
Georges Khalil

PS: If you plan to attend, a short notification to initiatives@trafo-berlin would help us to prepare the session. Thank you very much.

Abstract

Increasing transregional connectedness challenges traditional approaches in the field of area studies, while at the same time regional expertise, field work and an in-depth knowledge and understanding of societal, political and cultural developments in the region under investigation remain very significant. The important question many people from area studies and cooperating disciplines discuss nowadays is how to organize both research initiatives and curricula responding in an appropriate way to these challenges. When it comes to methodology some authors insist on comparison as the best way to produce more general knowledge, while others point to new approaches such as entangled, connected or shared histories.
