My current project, titled "Sacrifice on Display," examines German efforts to commemorate fallen soldiers of the First World War while focusing on commemorative mediums like Gedenkblätter, Ehrentafeln, and Gedenktafeln. I argue that the significance of these understudied visual sources may only be uncovered through archival research rather than mere visual analysis. This examination of the material and visual culture of the “cult of the fallen soldier” could offer a new perspective on how Germans remembered soldiers of the 1914-1918 conflict, as well as the extent to which government officials and commercial trends shaped memorialization. Accordingly, my project contributes to our understanding of how Germans attempted to cope with the loss of loved ones during and immediately after the First World War, and how the visual and material culture of mourning influenced their memories of the event.
