Kurt Guckelsberger (born 1941) studied Physics and Astrophysics in Munich and obtained his PhD in Grenoble, France. After stays at CERN and the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research, Stuttgart he entered PTB, the national metrology institute of Germany. From 1996 on, he was active in a number of international metrological projects. After retiring in 2006, he joined a Masters program of the Historical Seminar at Braunschweig University and is presently associate member of the 'Common Sense Geography' group at Free University, Berlin, Friedrich Meinecke Institute, Historical Geography of the Ancient Mediterranean. He has published 62 scientific papers, mainly on quantum phenomena in condensed matter. His present research interest is cartography before ~1520 CE.
