The world is facing enormous challenges today: Democracy is in peril as autocracy and populism are worldwide on the rise. Economic stability and progress are in danger as globalization is in retreat and the specter of stagflation is looming. The liberal international order is faltering as nations fail to resolve conflicts peacefully. In memory of the late South Korean President Kim Dae Jung, the Institute of Korean Studies of the Free University, Berlin celebrates the 5th Annual Lecture in this year. Kim Dae Jung left many important legacies, especially so through his struggles for democracy and human rights, his leadership in overcoming the IMF crisis of the late 1990s by implementing economic reforms, and his “sunshine policy” for a turn-around in the inter-Korea relations. It is our particular honor to invite Prof. Dr. YOU Jong-il, Dean of the KDI School of Public Policy and Management, for this memorial Lecture and to offer an opportunity to reflect on the relevance of Kim Dae Jung’s ideas and legacies for finding solutions to current challenges.
