Do your doctorate at the Department of History and Cultural Studies, which has an excellent reputation for research. Our renowned graduate schools offer structured and interdisciplinary doctoral programs in ancient studies, Muslim cultures and societies, East Asian studies, and global history. A comprehensive program in history and cultural studies is also available. In addition, there is the option of pursuing an individual doctoral degree.

The department offers five interdisciplinary doctoral programs: in ancient studies, Muslim cultures and societies, East Asian studies, global history, and interdisciplinary history and cultural studies.
As part of their individual doctoral studies, doctoral candidates conduct research in close consultation with their supervisors. They can also take advantage of training opportunities offered by the Dahlem Research School to promote young researchers.
