Research at the Department of History and Cultural Studies is internationally networked: with cooperation partners located around the world, projects in a variety of countries in Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and questions that span vast periods of time and space. Funding options
Freie Universität Berlin offers various short- and long-term funding programs for postdoctoral researchers, international scholarship holders, and international projects. Please contact your colleagues at the various institutes or the International Office to plan your stay and apply for funding. The German Academic Exchange Service has a scholarship database (for both the DAAD and other organizations) for foreign students, graduates, and postdocs.
Research abroad
As an employee or researcher at the department, you can take advantage of the wide range of funding opportunities offered by Freie Universität Berlin in the field of international research. The liaison offices at Freie Universität provide support for cooperation projects or stays in various regions of the world. Freie Universität Berlin is a member of the European university network Una Europa, which greatly facilitates networking between 11 locations, including Bologna, Krakow, Dublin, and Paris. Doctorate
Do your doctorate at the Department of History and Cultural Studies, which has an excellent reputation for research. Our renowned graduate schools offer structured and interdisciplinary doctoral programs in ancient studies, Muslim cultures and societies, East Asian studies, and global history. A comprehensive program in history and cultural studies is also available. In addition, there is the option of pursuing an individual doctoral degree.

The Department of History and Cultural Studies offers a wide range of support and information for prospective doctoral candidates and doctoral students.
Graduate schools and graduate programs
The department offers five interdisciplinary doctoral programs: in ancient studies, Muslim cultures and societies, East Asian studies, global history, and interdisciplinary history and cultural studies.
Individual doctoral studies
As part of their individual doctoral studies, doctoral candidates conduct research in close consultation with their supervisors. They can also take advantage of training opportunities offered by the Dahlem Research School to promote young researchers.
