Erasmus-Incomings
We are delighted that you are interested in an exchange at the Institute of Near Eastern Archaeology at the FU Berlin.
To help you prepare for your stay, please take note of the following information. Further information is available on Distributed Campus.
Contact persons at the Institute for Near Eastern Archaeology
Your departmental Erasmus+ coordinator can be reached at: exchangevordarch@geschkult.fu-berlin.de. Your departmental coordinator is responsible for signing the Learning Agreement and answering specific questions about courses and ECTS credits.
Please direct general and administrative questions (e.g., regarding the enrollment process, Confirmation of Stay/Erasmus+ certificates) to the central Erasmus+ Incoming Team at incoming@fu-berlin.de . Further information on the central Incoming Team can be found here.
Application
If you want to study abroad with Erasmus+, you need to apply through your home university. Please inquire there about deadlines and requirements. If you have been selected for an Erasmus+ study program at Freie Universität Berlin, your home university will nominate you to the central Incoming Team. You will then receive all further information on enrollment at FU Berlin from the central Incoming Team by email.
Orientation days
The program for the central orientation days for exchange students can be found here. The Institute of Near Eastern Archaeology organizes a welcome event for students every winter semester.Once the date for the event has been set, you can find the information under events.
Learning Agreement
Freie Universität Berlin uses the Online Learning Agreement (OLA) via the Erasmus+ Without Paper (EWP) platform. To ensure that the OLA reaches the appropriate office, please enter the name and email address of your departmental coordinator exchangevordarch@geschkult.fu-berlin.de as the “Responsible Person”. If your home university does not (yet) use the OLA, you can submit your Learning Agreement in PDF form. Please note that courses for the next semester are always updated a few weeks before the start of the semester. For this reason, you may need to make changes to your original Learning Agreement after selecting your courses.
Further focuments for the Learning Agreement can be found here and the portal for the Learning Agreement here.
Our courses
A list of current courses can be found in the FU Berlin course catalogue and on our website under Studies, Courses in the current semester.
As an Erasmus incoming student, you can take part in all courses. However, we recommend that you contact your home university in advance to find out whether you can have the courses at the FU Berlin recognised. The courses you select will be recorded in the Learning Agreement. Further forms for the Learning Agreement can be found here and the portal for the Learning Agreement here.
In addition, Erasmus+ students at bachelor's level have the opportunity to take courses from the interdisciplinary range of courses offered to visiting students.
Language
The courses in the Bachelor's programme are held in German, as are most of the courses in the Master's programme. Therefore, a minimum language level of B1 is required to follow the courses. The Master's program in Archaeology of the Ancient World offers courses in English.
(German) language courses are offered by the Language Center. Please note the different registration procedure for language courses. Students have the option of taking a 6-week German course (subject to a fee) before the start of the semester.
Registering for courses in Campus Management
At the beginning of the semester, you must use the Campus Management platform to register for courses in your study program. To do so, you will need an FU account (which you will receive after completing your enrollment). Information on the registration period can be found here. Please note the difference between restricted courses (with limited spots) and unrestricted courses. Instructions for using the web registration can be found here.
If you want to take a course that is not part of your study program, you must ask the course instructor if you are allowed to participate. If this is the case, no further online registration is required. Instead, at the end of the semester, you will be issued a certificate of examination and attendance which you can submit when applying for your Transcript of Records.
ECTS credits
The FU Berlin awards credit points for the courses. ECTS points are converted as follows:
| Participation in lecture, seminar, exercise, colloquium | 2 ECTS for semester (without grading) |
| Participation with a presentation or exam (BA + MA) | 4 ECTS* |
| Participation with a presentation and a term paper in BA (10-15 pages) | 8 ECTS* |
| Participation with a presentation and a term paper in MA (20-25 pages) | 13 ECTS* |
| *The number of ECTS depends on the actual scope of the examination performance and the study level and, if applicable, the individual language level. For a detailed overview please have a look at the list of courses and ECTS | |
Trasnscript of Records (ToR) and Confirmation of Stay
You will receive your Confirmation of Stay from the central Incoming Team (incoming@fu-berlin.de).
At the end of your stay you will receive a Transcript of Records (ToR). A ToR is necessary in order for the ECTS credits you have earned during your Erasmus stay at the FU to be recognised at your home university. A ToR can be issued once all credits have been earned.
Please request your transcript of records from the central Incoming Team. You will receive an email from the Incoming Team (from incoming@fu-berlin.de) explaining all the steps you need to take to request your transcript of records.
The following documents are required for the issue of a ToR:
- Application for your Transcript of Records (Deutsch, English)
- Printout from Campus Management of your ‘Grades & Points’
- Certificates for courses that were not registered via Campus Management. The form must be completed and signed by the lecturer. You can find the form here
- Send all forms and documents to the Incoming Team: incoming@fu-berlin.de
The Transcript can only be issued once all credits and grades have been entered into Campus Management or are available in the form of a certificate of examination and attendance. Processing takes approximately 2 weeks.
