Documenting your English language proficiency
In our program, all modules are taught in English. It is vital to have a high level of English proficiency in order to succeed in this course of study. Although meeting the formal language requirements is essential, we suggest taking some time to evaluate your personal language skills and ensure you're prepared for the academic demands of our program. As a student, you will be expected to read and comprehend academic texts, engage in high-level discussions during the class meetings, and express your ideas in academic prose in writing assignments and research papers as well as in your thesis.
When applying to the program, you'll need to submit proof of your English proficiency on a C1 (CEFR) level. There are various certificates that can be accepted as evidence of your English language proficiency, including:
- IELTS (Academic): overall score at least 7.0 (C1)
- TOEFL Internet-based iB: overall score 100 or higher, at least 25 in writing
- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): grades A-C
- Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): grades A-C
- Cambridge First Certificate of English (FCE): grades A-B
- Cambridge English Scale CPE, CAE and FCE (from January 2015): overall score at least 180 and in writing at least 180
- UNIcert® (level III or higher)
- language certificates by DAAD (C1 level),
- Erasmus Language Tests (C1 level),
- language certificates by university language departments (C1 level),
- confirmation of completed C1 level language courses (taken at a university or a language school).
Your certificate(s) of proficiency must not be no more than three years old at the time of application.
Further options
A document showing that applicants spent at least one year at an English-language university in an Anglophone country and successfully participated in several regular, linguistically demanding courses can also be used to demonstrate proficiency (if you are unsure if your university qualifies, please enquire via email), such as a bachelor's or master's degree (recognized in Germany) from a program that requires C1 as a prerequisite for admission or where the language of instruction is in English (the date of graduation should not older than three years), or a result with at least 12 points in the written 'Abitur' examination in English ('Leistungskurs'/advanced level).
Please provide only one document as proof of your proficiency in English; if you provide more than one document, only the latest will be considered for your application.Documenting your proficiency in an ancient language
You must provide proof of language skills, with at least 10 ECTS or equivalent in one or more of the following languages: Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittite, Ancient Greek, Latin, Sanskrit, or other ancient Semitic languages such as Hebrew, Aramaic, or Ge'ez.
A summer intensive ancient language course (e.g., six to eight weeks, focusing exclusively on a single ancient language) would also generally meet the 10 LP requirement.

When and where to submit proof of language proficiency
To apply for our program, you will need to provide proof of your language proficiency in advance; we cannot offer a preliminary admission without it. If you have any doubts about the specific certification requirements for your language proficiency, please don't hesitate to reach out to our knowledgeable academic advisors.
Bear in mind that German language proficiency is not required for the application process or the program of study.
Please do not send your certificates to our program's academic advisors; simply upload them directly to the relevant application portal.Selection criteria when admission is restricted

Applying with a degree from Germany
If you hold a first university degree from Germany, you must apply via the online form of Freie Universität Berlin.
Applying with a degree from a country other than Germany
If you hold a first university degree from a country other than German, you must apply via uni-assist, a Germany-wide association that provides processing and evaluation for international student applications. Freie Universität Berlin will accept such applications only when submitted through the uni-assist online portal. Uni-assist evaluates whether the application – i.e. your degree and transcript – meets the formal prerequisites established by Freie Universität Berlin. Uni-assist does not check subject-specific entry requirements, which is done by the STMAW selection commission of the Department of History and Cultural Studies.
Please note that our program's academic advisors cannot answer inquiries concerning the formal application process via Freie Universität and/or uni-assist (e.g. necessary documents, certification). In these matters, please contact Freie Universität Berlin's admission office (info-service@fu-berlin.de).
How to apply
Regardless of whether you are applying through the Freie Universität's application portal or through uni-assist, you will need to submit certain documents. Frequently asked questions
Students holding a degree from a university outside of Germany must submit their application through uni-assist (LINK).
STMAW is tuition-free. Fees for registering as a student of Freie Universität Berlin currently run at around €313 per semester (including free use of the Berlin public transportation system). For more information about the exact fees, see the website of the student administration (LINK).
We recommend checking the anabin database (LINK, currently available only in German) – a portal with information about which foreign degrees are recognized in Germany.
Yes, if you provide official, provisional documentation from the examination office of your university or faculty that includes a preliminary final grade and certifies that you have already earned at least two-thirds of the necessary credit points. It is not sufficient to calculate the preliminary final grade yourself. The certification must be handed in by the application deadline or your application will not be considered.
MA level credits can be used to meet admission requirements, but they cannot be used to substitute for coursework within the MA in STMAW. In other words, qualifications acquired in addition to the bachelor's degree (e.g., education other than a university program, professional experience, knowledge of relevant languages) can be considered within the application process in order to document skills and knowledge equivalent to 30 ECTS in courses that are relevant to STMAW, but these MA level quantifications cannot be used to fulfil requirements within the STMAW MA. See the admissions regulations (LINK wil be added soon) to learn about the ranking process.
Please note that, if your first university degree is unrelated to STMAW, we cannot take into account language courses in order to fulfill two different admission requirements: the minimum of 30 ECTS in courses that are relevant to STMAW and the 10 ECTS equivalent in ancient languages. In other words, the same 10 ECTS credits in ancient languages cannot be used to fulfil both the ancient language requirement and the requirement for 30 ECTS that are thematically related to STMAW.
Yes. Please note, however, that this is a consecutive master's program; therefore, you will be required to apply based on your bachelor's degree. Qualifications acquired in addition to the bachelor's degree (e.g., education other than a university program, professional experience, knowledge of relevant languages), can be considered within the application process to document skills and knowledge equivalent to 30 ECTS in courses that are relevant to STMAW.

To establish qualifications equivalent to 30 ECTS or more that are relevant to STMAW, submit together with your application the relevant documents.
Qualifications for the master’s degree program earned outside of a university setting can be documented through diplomas, certificates, or other official documents. Such qualifications include certificates of continuing education programs, degrees from training programs for recognized occupations, diplomas from institutions that are state-approved or recognized by a Chamber of Commerce and Industry, or an equivalent international professional qualification, and they must have been earned after the applicant’s Bachelor’s degree.
These additional qualifications must be substantially related to the subject matter of the applicant’s bachelor’s or previous master’s degree. Moreover, the qualification must have been awarded by an institution that is recognized by public law and must have been earned in the form of quantifiable and consecutive individual curricular modules. The qualification must be equivalent to at least level 6 of the German Qualifications Framework (Deutscher Qualifikationsrahmen, DQR). Professional experience that is pertinent to the STMAW program must have been gained after the completion of the bachelor's degree and must be fundamentally related to the subject matter of the applicant’s bachelor’s degree or a previous master’s degree program. Relevant professional experience can include, for example, work at a research center, either at a university or elsewhere, that deals with topics relevant to STMAW, working for international organizations or (non-) governmental organizations, for cultural or educational institutions.
Please note that, if your first university degree is unrelated to STMAW, we cannot take into account language courses in order to fulfil two different admission requirements: the minimum of 30 ECTS in courses that are relevant to STMAW and the 10 ECTS equivalent in ancient languages. .
Applicants must submit proof of English language proficiency on a C1 (CEFR) level (LINK) together with their application according to one of the options mentioned above.
If you are not sure whether you can start your studies in the first semester, please check whether a leave of absence would be an option for you (LINK).
Your application will be considered solely on the basis of your qualifications according to the admission requirements. However, we recommend applying with a motivation letter and your CV, especially when applying with an unrelated bachelor's degree or with additional, non-bachelor’s degree qualifications.
We will not take into account letters of recommendation or work samples.
Uni-assist will check your certificates (e.g., your bachelor’s certificate) for equivalence to German educational standards; after that, the application will be forwarded to the university for evaluation in terms of its formal compliance with the admission requirements as per STMAW's admission regulations (LINK will be added soon), e.g., whether the fulfillment of every single admission requirement has been documented with your application; after that, the master's program selection officers will evaluate your application in terms of its disciplinary aspects such as the relevance of your bachelor's degree, your language proficiencies as well as the documentation of your degree(s) and proficiencies.
Assuming that the application is complete, each of these three steps can take up to four weeks starting from the day of application, if submitted within the application period. So, at the latest 12 weeks after application, your documents will have been reviewed but it may take a further four weeks until the official admission or rejection letters will be sent out.
Please note, however, that we as master’s program selection officers are not involved in the central admission processes.
The given timeframes only apply to applications that have been submitted completely and within the application period. A complete application must fulfill each of the individual admission requirements as per STMAW's regulations; check the different options, for example, for demonstrating your proficiency in English here LINK.
