Examinations

Types of Examinations

The MA Global East Asia program is divided into modules, each consisting of one or two courses. The number of courses in a module is determined by the Degree Program and Examination Regulations [DE/EN]. These regulations also provide details on the type and scope of module examinations.

To successfully complete a module or a course, you may be required to take a combination of different assessments. If no other arrangements have been made with the instructors, assessment is understood as follows:

  • Regular attendance: Attendance of at least 85% of the course.
  • Active participation: Documented participation in the course, e.g. discussion, group work, oral and written assignments, individually or in groups, research tasks, academic/scientific note-taking, reading sources and literature, written work, inde-pendent research and elaboration upon contributions made to class discussions, (oral) presentation
  • Written exam
  • E-examination: Examinations are partly conducted electronically in cooperation with the E-Examination Center of Freie Universität.
  • Presentation: Presentation based on independent research with bibliography.
  • Term paper: Written elaboration of a scientific question based on independent research with reference to sources.

Unless otherwise agreed, the scope and length of presentations and assignments are determined by the examination regulations.

Grades

In the MAGEA program, grades are assigned solely based on module examinations, not individual courses. Grading systems for modules can vary: Some modules are graded on a pass/fail basis, others are assessed using differentiated grades, and some modules are not graded at all. Appendix 1 of the Degree Program and Examination Regulations [DE/EN] specifies in each module description whether the assessment is ungraded or only graded undifferentiated.

No specification means a differentiated assessment with grades as follows:

1.0, 1.3, 1.7, 2.0, 2.3, 2.7, 3.0, 3.3, 3.7, 4.0, and 5.0.

The following terms are used for module and overall grades falling within the average ranges below:

1.0 through 1.5 = Very Good
over 1.5 through 2.5 = Good
over 2.5 through 3.5 = Satisfactory
over 3.5 through 4.0 = Sufficient
over 4.0

= Not Passed

Also, consult your professor or academic advisor if you are uncertain about the grading system for a given module.
