Library
Campus Library for science, cultural studies, education, mathematics, computer science and psychology
The Campus Library has about a million volumes displayed in open shelves. It combines the holdings of 24 former Freie Universität Berlin institute and department libraries. All books have been reclassified and labeled consistently with shelf numbers according to the Regensburg Classification (RVK). That way, it has been possible to shelve them uniformly – not as a collection of separate small libraries installed next to one another in one building, but rather merged into one single large library. In consequence, the combination has achieved more than forming a library with more books in particular subject areas; it has brought the related books together on the shelves.
The main subject areas are Antiquity, East Asia, Orient, Sciences and Mathematics (in the new four-level part) and Education and Psychology as well as Religion and Theologies (in the seven-level rehabilitated former Education Library (EWI) part). Both parts together add up to one library where all users can move from one side to the other on all levels without having to pass any security gates. In total, there are some 950 working spaces available in the two parts of the building.
