In the QS World University Ranking by Subject 2021 our department remains one of the top players. In the field of history, we are ranked first in Germany and 23rd worldwide - making us the only national university in the top 25. We can also maintain our position in archaeology from last year and are ranked second (after Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen).

In the subject area "Arts and humanities" we are ranked 2nd nationally after the Humboldt University of Berlin and are one of the top 25 universities internationally when it comes to study and research for culture and literature.

The QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Ranking by subject covers 48 subjects. According to QS, each subject ranking is based on four factors: the globally collected assessments of scholars (1) and employers (2) on the reputation of the institutions in the respective subject, and the research impact based on citations (3) and h-index (4) in the subjects.
