Institute
The Institute of Semitic Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin is characterised by a strong focus on the Christian Orient and on spoken Semitic languages. Particular emphasis is placed on Arabic and Aramaic dialectology. Linguistic research further includes the analysis of Biblical Hebrew, the study of Ugaritic, and work in Comparative Semitics, with a focus on genealogical relationships within the Semitic language family.

Semitic Studies explores the Semitic languages, history and cultures of West Asia and North Africa.
As a linguistic discipline, it investigates the full spectrum of Semitic languages, from their earliest attestations to the dialects spoken today.
