KEC Special Lecture Series on North Korea - Dr. Hyun-Kyung Kim

Presenter:

Dr. Hyun-Kyung Kim (MBC)

Abstract:

Television in North Korea is a propaganda tool. It is therefore conceivable to assume that North Korean television broadcasts will only ever show what the government wants to be seen, both when it comes to spoken words and images, not reality as such. However, so long as they are aimed at the public in the real world, broadcasts cannot succeed in hiding reality altogether. In her lecture, Dr Kim will introduce video clips from various North Korean TV programmes that can provide us with a glimpse into the reality of North Korea, including the tasks currently faced by the country’s political, social, and economic system, the needs of its people, and recent changes in North Korean society.
