KEC Special Lecture Series 2022 - Dr. Cheonsik Woo

IKS presents a special lecture series focusing on the political economy in South Korea as part of the module of 21 Century Korea. For the third public lecture of the series, Dr Cheonsik Woo from the Korea Development Institute (KDI) will talk about the Korean economy and society in the age of digital transformation, particularly during/after covid-19. His recent co-edited book Shifting Paradigms - Growth, Finance, Jobs and Inequality in the Digital Economy (2022) was selected as the book of November at Brookings.

"The Korean Economy in the Age of 'Turbulent' Digital Transformation - Beyond the Old Miracle and Normals"

Abstract:

Digitalization has accelerated throughout society due to the influence of COVID 19. In contrast to the fast development of technology, policies and institutions have not caught up with the change fast enough, resulting in the polarization of companies, the monopoly of productivity, and subsequent income inequality. The lecture will explain the current economic and social imbalance in Korean society that digitalisation, automation and other technological advancements.

Dr. Cheonsik Woo (Senior visiting fellow at the Korea Development Institute (Center for Futures & Strategy)

Cheonsik Woo is a senior visiting fellow at the Korea Development Institute (Center for Futures & Strategy). He previously served as Senior Counselor to the Deputy Prime Minister at Korea’s Ministry of Finance and Economy and Senior Analyst at the OECD, and currently as a founding executive of the Korean Association for Futures Studies. His research interests include Korea’s development strategy, industrial competitiveness, and human resource development. His latest contributions include:

"Shifting Paradigms - Growth, Finance, Jobs and Inequality in the Digital Economy (Brookings, 2022) (co-ed)), "Inclusive Growth Review of Korea - Creating Opportunities for All (OECD 2021) (Project Manager of KDI), "'Vision2030 of the Republic of Korea (2007). He holds PhD in Economics from Columbia University and taught at Clemson University before joining KDI in 1995.
