This interdisciplinary workshop will highlight various developments and manifestations of modernity in Asia and Europe during the 1920s and 1930s. In Europe, as in Asia, this time was marked by economic and political crises, but at the same time cross-cultural exchange and international relations and contacts/networks developed, most pronouncedly in the fields of performing and visual arts, therein provoking social and political discourses. In the workshop, these diverse developments in arts and culture will be placed in their local and global contexts through individual papers. The focus will be on the question of the cultural identity of art, the relationship of tradition and modernity and especially transcultural manifestations of art, a field that had been neglected in research publications on modernism in Europe as well as in Asia.

Registration required until February 4, 2014 under annegret.bergmann@fu-berlin.de
