The Expanded Ecologies of Contemporary Art
This project examines how and why ecology has become a key concept
in contemporary art. Surpassing its origins in biology, ecology now refers
expansively to the interacting assemblages of technical apparatuses, social
relations, and natural ecosystems that mark what is widely termed the
Anthropocene. In turn, various artistic practices do not simply represent the
expanded ecology of contemporary capitalism or its adverse environmental
effects, but deploy its techniques or intervene in its transnational
processes. By developing and applying a new theoretical framework,
this project investigates this operational turn in contemporary art and its
immanent entanglements with colonial-capitalist modernity.
