• 1976-1984 studies Protestant Theology and Jewish Studies at the Universities of Bonn and Cologne
• 1984 passes exam at the Protestant Chuch of Rhineland
• 1984-1989 studies Jewish Studies in Berlin and Jerusalem
• 1989 gets Ph.D. (summa cum laude) at Freie Universität Berlin
• 1978-84 student assitant to Prof. Peter Schäfer in his research project on editing Hekhalot-literature (early Jewish mysticism) at the University of Cologne
• 1984-1989 research assistant on the research project "Translating Hekhalot-literature" at Freie Universität Berlin
• 1989-1993 (spring) researcher at Freie Universität Berlin
• 1993-1994 receives research fellowship (Feodor Lynen-Forschungsstipendium) from the Humboldt Foundation for the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
• since 1994 (summer) academic counsellor for Jewish Studies at Freie Universität Berlin
• 1994-2003 managing editor of Jewish Studies Quarterly
• 2009-2011 leads school project "History und Oral History" (in cooperation with CeDiS)
