Introduction

The Chinese Studies/East Asian Studies programs are based on a concept of area studies that facilitates specialization by promoting the interdisciplinary approach needed to understand the regions and by strengthening and expanding knowledge of the content, language and methodology. The cultural and scientific traditions of China are also taken into account.

The key topics are the society of contemporary China and its historical development processes as well as the political, social, economic and cultural transformation that has taken place in the globalising environment. This field of research is divided into four main study areas: history and culture; politics and society; economics and law; Chinese as a foreign language.

The programs enable students to gain historical and systematic knowledge of Chinese society while improving their language skills and, at the same time, familiarising themselves with the content and methodological tools that are required to analyse specific aspects of Chinese society. In this way, students acquire the skills needed to carry out independent research on China-related topics from diverse socio-cultural perspectives. The aim is to maintain the viewpoints of each specific subject area while developing a new integrated approach by employing methodology drawn, for example, from the social sciences and women’s and gender studies.

The Chinese Studies/East Asian Studies programs offer:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA) courses: mono-bachelor in Chinese Studies/East Asian studies, majors in history and culture; politics and society; economics and law.
  • Master’s degree courses: Chinese Studies, majors in Chinese history; contemporary China.
