Strategies for German-Iraqi Collaboration in Historical Research (10-13. July)

A delegation of high-ranking scholars from various universities of Iraq (Kufa, Najaf, Baghdad) met in Heidelberg with German historians and archaeologists to discuss strategies of cooperation. The meeting was organized by Jenny Oesterle and Bashar Ibrahim and supported by the AGYA.

Isabel Toral participated in the general discussion and worked as chair, particularly with the colleagues from Kufa, who offered to help in the acquisition of manuscripts in Iraq. Furthermore, she gave a presentation on opportunities for Iraqi PhD students in Berlin.

The meeting was interesting because it gave the opportunity to make first-hand contact with Iraqi colleagues who might help to acquire manuscripts and establish further networks there. However, the devastating effect of the long-lasting war on the educational system in Iraq became clear.
