TALK The Caravan of Tales: The Journey of Kalīla wa-Dimna Across Times and Cultures, by Khouloud Khalfallah and Oualid El Khattabi
"A NOS FABLES": festive event around the fables of Kalila and Dimna at Kuwait City.

This presentation explores the transmission history of the Kalīla wa-Dimna manuscript tradition. It presents research findings from the AnonymClassic team, covering the manuscript corpus, the trajectory of its transmission, methodological considerations informing the research, and the practical applications derived from the work conducted thus far. A central focus of this lecture is the critical role of manuscript traditions, translation movements, indirect transmission, and the variations observed between the extant Arabic manuscripts in shaping the textual evolution of Kalīla wa-Dimna over time. Meticulously tracing these considerations, the presentation aims to illuminate the processes through which Kalīla wa-Dimna was transformed and recontextualized across diverse cultural and linguistic landscapes. Particular emphasis will be placed on the Western European transmission, specifically examining the Older Hebrew, Old Castilian, and Latin translations, which were instrumental in introducing the text to European audiences.
