On the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27th 2025, the Institute for Jewish Studies at Freie Universität Berlin showed the documentary "Back in Berlin" by Bobby Lax in the lecture hall of Thielallee 67.
After a video greeting by First Vice President, Prof. Dr. Verena Blechinger-Talcott, and a welcoming address by Head of the Institute for Jewish Studies, Prof. Dr. Reimund Leicht, Prof. Dr. Silvana Greco, sociologist of Judaism, introduced the topic of the documentary. In her presentation she reminded the audience of the tragic fate the Lax family met unter the nazi regime. Bobby Lax's father, Edgar Lax (1923-2013) was saved at the last minute through a Kindertransport from Berlin to England in 1939. His grandparents, Amalie (1883-1943) and Jakob (1880-1943) however, were murdered in Auschwitz on January 14th 1943.
The viewing was followed by an interesting, moving and inspiring discussion between the audience, director Bobby Lax, and the second protagonist, photographer Manuel Harlan. The discussion was moderated by Prof. Dr. Silvana Greco.
Our warmest thanks to Bobby Lax and Manuel Harlan for such a memorable evening!
