Kurdish belongs to the North West Iranian languages. Basically it is divided in three literary languages that are grammatically and lexically distinct.

  1. Northern Kurdish (Kurmancî), spoken in Turkey, Irak, Syria, Armenia, Azerbaidschan and in the region of Urmia lake (Iran)
  2. Central Kurdish (Soranî)in Irak and Iran
  3. Southern Kurdish in Iran and Irak

In Kurdish literature both the Arabic script as well as the Latin script are used.
