Kurdish language, history and literature has been a main area of research at the Institute of Iranian Studies for decades.
Kurdish belongs to the North West Iranian languages. Basically it is divided in three literary languages that are grammatically and lexically distinct.
- Northern Kurdish (Kurmancî), spoken in Turkey, Irak, Syria, Armenia, Azerbaidschan and in the region of Urmia lake (Iran)
- Central Kurdish (Soranî)in Irak and Iran
- Southern Kurdish in Iran and Irak
In Kurdish literature both the Arabic script as well as the Latin script are used.
The Institute of iranian Studies offers courses for Northern and Central Kurdish.
