Titel: Computer-based analysis of multi-sided seals from the „Corpus der minoischen und mykenischen Siegel“

 

This dissertation project at Heidelberg University applies computer-assisted methods to analyse multi-sided Minoan and Mycenaean seals from the Corpus of Minoan and Mycenaean Seals (CMS), seeking to identify patterns in motif composition. Statistical methods, clustering algorithms and network analysis are used to model the relationships between motifs, seal types and geographical locations, to identify regional and chronological distributions. The results of these analyses will be used to answer questions about the semantic meaning of motif compositions and the functional differences between seal groups, to gain a deeper understanding of the contexts in which Minoan-Mycenaean seal art was used and the cultural practices involved.
