The subject of my dissertation is the question of what functions ancient female figures had in the early modern debate on the value of masculinity and femininity and what methods Italian authors used to underpin their own arguments regarding the superiority/inferiority of the male and female sex. From a gender-historical perspective, I will use selected ancient women to compare the statements of various authors, such as Lucrezia Marinella, Moderata Fonte and Giuseppe Passi, in order to find out whether and to what extent the receptive biographies of women have changed under the influence of the Querelle des Femmes. The project therefore combines aspects of ancient historical and early modern (reception-) research and is interdisciplinary in nature.
The dissertation project is supervised by Prof. Dr. Daniela Hacke and Prof. Dr. Babett Edelmann-Singer.
