Evangelia Georgedaki

PhD Candidate

Gravestones from Crete from the Archaic to the Roman era. Epigraphic development and archaeological context

I was born in Chania (Crete) and completed my Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology and Art History at the University of Rethymno. I pursued my Master’s degree at Humboldt University of Berlin, where I worked with the Inscriptiones Graecae project, contributing both to field campaigns and to the edition of epigraphic material. In addition, I have participated in several excavations in Crete. My research interests focus on Greek epigraphy and the material evidence of ancient Greece, particularly with regard to the social and historical questions that can be explored through these sources. A special focus of my work lies on the study of gender roles in antiquity.

The dissertation project will examine Cretan funerary stelae and their inscriptions from the Archaic to the Roman period. By combining archaeological, typological, and epigraphic analyses, it aims to explore regional differences, social identity, and external influences, and to place Cretan funerary culture within its broader Mediterranean context.

The project is being supervised by Prof. Dr. Johanna Fabricius and PD Dr. Sebastian Prignitz.

Evangelia Georgedaki's past projects include work on the Inscriptiones Graecae as well as excavations in Eleutherna and Kalami.
