Topography

A central foundation for cultural encounter was the encounter with landscape. Landscapes posed the first challenges for soldiers and necessitated thorough investigation by way of maps and other measurements. Topographies were ultimately spaces in which military operations, lines of communication, and supply lines needed to succeed, even in difficult terrains and seasons. A region’s climate was often a great enemy to western armies. However landscapes also often served as sights that awakened touristic interests.
