Resistance

The military presence of western armies in the regions shown here also evoked resistance. This resistance expressed itself through uprisings as well as through personal decisions (Prussian officers, for example, who entered into Russian service to fight Napoleon) or through the specific form of a religiously motivated resistance (as in the case of the 1914 declaration of Jihad and the Mahdi Uprising in Egypt against imperial powers).
