Lecture: Restoration of the Erfurt Bible
News from Jan 05, 2026
The two-volume Erfurt Bible is the largest known Hebrew parchment Bible in the world and is therefore also referred to as the “Giant Bible.” In their lecture (German), the conservators Ira Glasa and Christine Theuerkauf-Rietz explain the complex work carried out on this unique manuscript, which fell victim to a pogrom in 1349 and was damaged during the Second World War. While the first volume is still undergoing restoration, the second volume can be used in the form of individual folios.
