Frequently Asked Questions concerning the Master Degree Program Public History

No, the Master’s degree program in Public History is a consecutive MA designed for students who hold a BA degree. Furthermore, it is not a MA program for further studies that requires first work experience in the fields of Public History.

No. First experiences in the environment of public dissemination of history (e.g. in the media, museums, archives, publishing houses, activities in history workshops or in history marketing) are merely welcome. However, according to § 10 par. 2 no 5 BerlHZG (Berliner Hochschulzulassungsgesetz) this could be an eligibility criterion.

The Master’s Program Public History is primarily designed for students who hold a BA degree in History. Nevertheless, applicants holding a equivalent or higher degree in History or a related subject are also eligible for admission. 

This is possible if your university’s examinations office or faculty provides you with a provisional certificate containing your preliminary final grade and evidence that you have completed two thirds of your necessary credits. 

The usual procedure for applications for consecutive Master’s degree programs at the Freie Universität Berlin applies: during the application period you have to 1.) Fill out the online form and 2.) Print the application form, sign it and send it to the Admissions Office together with the required copies of your diplomas or other final grade certificates.

Please note that applications that are sent directly to the Friedrich-Meinecke-Institut of the Freie Universität Berlin will not be considered. 

For the Master’s program in Public History your English language skills should be on level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (“Gemeinsamen Europäischen Referenzrahmen für Sprachen”). Usually, a copy of your high school certificate will suffice if it shows you took English in school for at least seven years.

If you cannot provide evidence of seven years English class in school, you need to provide equivalent proof that your English is up to the standard of level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, e.g. with an according TOEFL certificate. No, the MA program starts every winter semester only. It is not possible to apply for a start in the summer semester or to change into the program at any other point.

Yes, every year we will admit about 20 students into the program.

No, the Public History program is a full-time MA program and not an option for professionals who seek an opportunity for further studies and qualifications parallel to their occupation.

Yes, the MA degree Public History also is a Master of Arts. For its academic contents it is of the same value as a “normal” MA degree in History.

Yes. The consecutive Master’s program Public History is based on a BA in History and, consequently, can lead to a PhD in History.
