News from Jan 08, 2015

The Music and Sound Studies Network of the German Studies Association invites proposals from scholars working on NOISE broadly defined. We encourage proposals considering noise in the German-speaking world as object of study, value judgment, means of coercion or transgression, as weapon or experience, or as performance.  We seek proposals from innovative scholars across the gamut of disciplines, methodologies, and historical periods who are interested in cultivating transdisciplinary conversation and collaboration. Applicants should incorporate actual noise into their presentations whenever possible, as the sessions will be equipped with good audio equipment. Possible topics could include (but are certainly not limited to) legal conflicts or policies about noise, sound pollution, tension between definitions of noise vs. music, the impact of industrial noise, artistic/aesthetic use of noise, sound art, the noise of war or political activity, gendered use or interpretation of sound, or how noise has shaped the development of various disciplines.

Abstracts of 200 words are due to both network coordinators by 25 January 2015.
