Flight and Expulsion in European Museums

Conflicts and Convergences in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic

The way to remember flight and expulsion of Germans after World War II has been one of the most controversial historical-political and social questions of the last 30 years – not only in Germany, but also in Poland and the Czech Republic as well as between these countries.

The dissertation investigates firstly the discourse history that reaches back to the beginning of the Cold War and secondly, the question of the musealization of this topic that has become essential in the last two decades.

Based on an exhibition-concept analysis, two regional museum initiatives in Poland and in the Czech Republic together with their ‘equivalents’ in Germany will be analyzed and compared as well as three institutions with an explicitly European approach:

The Silesian Museums in Katowice and Görlitz are the first pair to be compared; the Museum of the German speaking citizens of Bohemia (Muzeum německy mluvících obyvatel českých zemí) in Ústí nad Labem and the Museum of Sudeten Germans in Munich the second. The third comparison group consists of the Foundation Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation (Stiftung Flucht, Vertreibung, Versöhnung) in Berlin, the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk and the House of European History in Brussels.
