About Berlin
Berlin is the capital, and the largest city, of Germany. It has a long, wounded and interrupted history resulting in its contemporary multicultural and cosmopolitan population. Besides the conference, don’t miss the opportunity to discover the diversity of this exciting city.
Coming Around
The most confusing characteristic of Berlin is that it has no fixed city core, but various centres in different part of the city. The largest and most famous ones are Alexanderplatz (the centre of the ‘Old East’), Breitscheidplatz (the centre of the ‘Old West’) and Potsdamer Platz (the ‘new architecture’ entertainment/commercial hub). You should familiarize yourself with the excellent public transport system linking various areas of Berlin.
Apart from numerous bus and tram services, the U-Bahn (underground train) and the S-Bahn (overground train) link various sections of the city. In order to plan your trip through Berlin please visit the English homepage of the BVG.
We would recommend you to either purchase the weekly ticket (7-Tage-Karte VBB-Umweltkarte) if you intend to travel a lot during your stay or a set of four single tickets (4-Fahrten-Karte) if you plan to mainly attend the conference. Tickets may be purchased from machines on the platforms, using cash or card, or on the bus and trams.
Sight-seeing
Berlin offers a great diversity of places which are worth visiting but the Museumsinsel might be the most interesting option for archaeologists. Here, the Pergamon Museum and the Neues Museum provide excellent exhibitions covering a wide range of archaeological and historical topics from different cultures and periods: https://www.smb.museum/en/museums-institutions/museumsinsel-berlin/home.html
Unfortunately, the Pergamon Altar will be closed due to renovation until 2019.
