Masāfer Yaṭṭa is a collection of small villages, many of which are inhabited by cave-dwelling families, located in the southernmost part of the West Bank, Palestine. The community is currently facing significant political and economic pressures, placing its linguistic heritage at risk and rendering its documentation particularly urgent. This presentation outlines the region’s unique historical background, examines present-day conditions in Masāfer Yaṭṭa and draws on fieldwork to present selected linguistic phenomena. These linguistic features are illustrated through recordings of elder speakers from the community and, where relevant, compared with parallel phenomena in other Arabic dialects and other Semitic languages.
